Bambu Lab R1: A 55W CO2 Laser That Skips the Calibration Ritual

Bambu Lab built their reputation on 3D printers that work out of the box. The R1 is their first standalone laser cutter, and the pitch is the same: take a category known for fiddly setup and make it boring in the good way.

Whether they pulled it off depends on what you are trying to make. Here is the detail.

What it is

The R1 is a 55W CO2 laser cutter and engraver with a 600 × 300 mm bed. It cuts up to 20 mm acrylic and 18 mm plywood in a single pass, engraves at up to 1,000 mm/s, and handles wood, clear acrylic, glass, leather, fabric, slate and anodised aluminium.

Price in Singapore is S$3,210 excluding GST. It is currently open for pre-order with a 5–6 week lead time.

The calibration problem, solved

If you have owned a CO2 laser, you know the ritual. Mirror alignment means thermal paper, test shots, small adjustments, another test shot, repeat. It can eat an afternoon, and there is no way to know in advance how long it will take.

The R1 replaces this with a sensor. You mount the Laser Alignment Sensor on the toolhead, and the machine measures the beam, detects the misalignment, and corrects the optical path automatically - in about one minute. No thermal paper, no guessing.

This is the least glamorous feature on the spec sheet and probably the one you will appreciate most in month three.

Speed that comes from somewhere real

1,000 mm/s with 20,000 mm/s² acceleration is roughly 3× faster than a typical CO2 laser on image engraving. That number is believable because of where it comes from: Bambu Lab moved the motion control from their printers across, including vibration compensation.

When a toolhead changes direction fast, a split-second shake ripples into the line that follows. On a 3D printer that shows up as ringing on a wall. On a laser it shows up as a wobbly engrave. The R1 cancels it, which is what lets it run fast without the output going soft.

There is a second piece: engraving depth normally gets shallower as speed goes up. The R1 compensates as it moves, so a job at 1,000 mm/s still lands at the depth you set.

TriSense: what you mark is what you cut

The R1 combines three sensing systems - cameras, laser height sensing, and XY encoders - into what Bambu Lab calls TriSense. Positioning accuracy is within 0.2 mm. In practice:

  • Curved surfaces: height sensing follows every rise and fall, keeping engraving sharp across cups, spheres and uneven stock.
  • Transparent materials: surface measurement stays accurate on glass and clear acrylic, which trips up a lot of camera-only systems.
  • Small parts: the toolhead camera finds tiny objects and places fine detail where you want it.
  • Cut-around: trim a printed sticker or follow a drawn outline - the camera traces the edge and keeps the cut on path.

There is also a Vision Encoder (sold separately) that corrects for mechanical drift over time, holding absolute accuracy within 0.1 mm across the full bed. Draw 300 mm, cut 300 mm.

Class 1 safety, with one large asterisk

In standard enclosed use the R1 is Class 1 under IEC 60825-1. Laser radiation stays inside the enclosure. No safety goggles, no dedicated laser room. For an HDB workshop, a school, a shared studio or an office corner, this genuinely changes where you can put the machine.

It also has lid-open stop (laser cuts immediately and stays disabled while open), flame detection, and an emergency stop.

The asterisk: the moment you fit the Riser Base or the Conveyor, the enclosure is no longer complete and the R1 becomes a Class 4 device. That means CO2 laser-safety eyewear and trained operators only. Bambu Lab states this plainly and so do we - if you are buying the long-material setup, budget for goggles and treat it as a different machine safety-wise.

Air handling

Most desktop lasers rely on a single exhaust fan pulling from one corner, which leaves dead spots. The R1 uses crossflow ventilation - fresh air in one side, smoke out the other - clearing the chamber evenly.

If you are running it indoors with the aircon on and the windows shut, which describes most Singapore workshops, this matters. Bambu Lab also sells the E1 Pro air purifier (separate) that connects directly to the exhaust outlet with activated carbon filtration.

Going bigger: the three configurations

We list all three versions. Only the base R1 is open for pre-order right now; the bundles are shown so you can see what is coming.

Configuration Adds Price (excl. GST)
R1 Machine, ventilation hose and fan, Laser Alignment Sensor, calibration board, acrylic and plywood samples S$3,210
R1 Long Material Bundle + Riser Base, + Automatic Conveyor Feeder (stock up to 3 m) S$4,127
R1 Long Material & Rotary Bundle + Rotary Attachment and bracket (360° engraving on bottles, bowls, cups) S$4,402

The Conveyor is the interesting one. Feeding 3-metre stock through a desktop machine turns it into something that can make shelving and table tops, not just coasters and signage.

What we would flag before you buy

We sell it, so take this in the spirit intended - but a machine this new deserves honest framing.

It is new. Firmware will improve, and some things are not there yet. Bambu Lab has confirmed that at launch only Cylinder Processing is supported; Revolve Shape processing is coming in a future update. If rotary and curved work is the core of your business rather than an occasional job, that is worth weighing.

Thick cutting needs a lens you do not get in the box. The 20 mm acrylic figure requires the medium or long focus lens, sold separately. The R1 ships with the short-focus S lens, which is optimised for detail rather than depth.

Automatic material recognition only works with Bambu Lab materials. Third-party stock still works fine, you just set parameters yourself as you would on any laser.

A few useful parts are separate purchases: M and L lenses, Vision Encoder, E1 Pro purifier, Riser Base, Conveyor, Rotary.

Who it suits

Good fit: makers and small businesses who want fast engraving without a calibration learning curve; anyone who needs Class 1 safety because of where the machine has to live; existing Bambu Lab printer owners already comfortable with the ecosystem; workshops that want the option to grow into 3-metre stock later.

Think harder if: you need a fully settled toolchain for production work starting next month; rotary and curved-surface engraving is the bulk of your output; or your budget cannot stretch to the extra lens you will probably want.

Buying in Singapore

iLaser is the authorised Bambu Lab dealer in Singapore. That means a genuine unit, a local 1-year manufacturer warranty, and service handled by our own engineers here rather than a shipping label to somewhere else.

The R1 is open for pre-order at S$3,210 with a 5–6 week lead time.
