3D Printing for Kids: A Beginner's Guide for Primary School Students

Ask a seven-year-old to design something and they will not hesitate. Ask an adult and they will worry about getting it wrong. That instinct is exactly why 3D printing works so well with young children — it turns an idea into an object they can hold, in an afternoon, with no drawing skill required.

We put together a short video series aimed at lower primary students, taking them from "what is this machine" to their first finished print. Below are all three parts, followed by a practical guide for the parent or teacher setting it up.

What age can start?

From around 7 or 8, a child can run a modern 3D printer with an adult nearby. They are not writing code or tuning settings — they choose a model, tap print, and watch it happen. The understanding comes later, and it comes faster because they have already seen it work.

Below 7, children still get a lot out of watching and choosing what to print. The machine operation is the adult's job at that stage.

Which printer for a child or a classroom?

The honest answer is: the one that fails least. Nothing kills a child's interest faster than three failed prints in a row.

Bambu Lab A1 Mini (S$274) is the machine we recommend most often for families and primary schools:

  • Small footprint — fits on a desk or classroom bench
  • Fully automatic bed levelling, so there is no fiddly setup for a child to get wrong
  • Fast and quiet enough to run in a shared room
  • 180 × 180 × 180 mm build volume — plenty for toys, models and school projects
  • The Combo version adds AMS Lite for four-colour printing, which is what makes kids' eyes light up

Step up to the A1 (S$403) if you want a larger 256 mm bed for bigger projects.

A note on safety: the A1 and A1 Mini are open-frame machines. The nozzle runs above 200°C and the bed is heated, so young children need supervision and a clear rule about not reaching into the machine while it is running. If you want the hot parts behind a door — relevant for an unsupervised classroom corner — an enclosed machine like the P1S is the safer layout, at roughly double the price.

Which filament is safe for kids?

Use PLA. Only PLA.

PLA Basic prints at a lower temperature than other materials, is made from plant starch, and does not produce the sharp chemical smell that ABS and ASA do. It is also the easiest material to print successfully, which matters more than anything when the goal is to keep a child interested.

Avoid ABS, ASA and any carbon-fibre filled filament around children — those need an enclosed printer with proper ventilation and belong in an adult workshop.

Ventilation is still sensible even with PLA. An open window or a room that is not sealed shut is enough.

What should they print first?

Start with something that finishes in under two hours. A print that takes nine hours is a lesson in disappointment.

  • Articulated animals — print in one piece, come out moving. Always a hit.
  • Name tags and keychains — fast, personal, and they can give them away
  • Simple puzzles and fidget toys
  • Classroom items — pencil holders, bag tags, small containers

Bambu's MakerWorld library has thousands of free, tested models that print without modification. Let a child browse and choose — the choosing is part of the engagement.

When should they start designing?

After a few successful prints, not before. Once they trust the machine works, they will want to make something that does not exist yet.

Tinkercad is the standard first tool — free, browser-based, built around dragging and combining simple shapes. Most children pick it up in one session. There is no need to touch professional CAD at this stage.

Safety rules worth setting

  • An adult starts and stops the print
  • Nobody reaches into the machine while it is moving
  • The nozzle and bed stay hot after a print finishes — wait before touching
  • Removing prints from the plate is an adult job (the plate flexes, and tools slip)
  • Print in a room with airflow

For schools and enrichment centres

If you are setting up 3D printing for a class rather than one child, the machine is the easy part. What usually stalls a school programme is that the teacher was never trained and the printer ends up in a cupboard.
